Shell Adds Rotational Molding Capacity at Keystone State Site
Shell Polymers enhances rotational molding by bringing a Smart Machine 2.8 in-house, with an eye toward advancing testing and collaboration opportunities.
Shell Polymers has installed the Smart Machine 2.8 at its Application Hall in Monaca, Pennsylvania, expanding its in-house capabilities to support the rotational molding market. Shell says the goal of the installation is to advance application development through customer-focused innovation and hands-on technical support.

“This addition demonstrates Shell Polymers’ commitment to continuous investment in new equipment and innovation across key application areas, including rotational molding, and expands opportunities for collaboration, research and education in the rotational molding market,” says Ryan Bickley, commercial technical manager at Shell Polymers. With the machine in-house, the company is increasing capacity and can support more customer needs, he adds.
Manufactured by Persico Group, the Smart Machine 2.8 is a fully electric machine designed for improved efficiency, performance and control. The investment is expected to aid in accelerating service timelines, helping advance material testing and development.
The Smart Machine 2.8 will be fitted with two ARM (Association of Rotational Molders) impact test molds capable of producing 24 ARM impact plaques per cycle in a part, adding 48 impact plaques to Shell Polymers’ capabilities. The company is now equipped to conduct trials on-site using production-relevant equipment tailored for applications like storage containers, children's toys and multi-layer articles. With the capability to bi-axially rotate as well as rock and roll, the machine also features pressurization, vacuum and nitrogen packages. Shell Polymers will begin hosting customers at the facility in 2026.
