3Devo Filament Maker Two Enhances Extrusion Control
The machine includes an upgraded screw drive, monitoring and user interface for enhanced filament production.
Dutch tech company 3devo has launched the Filament Maker Two, a machine designed to give 3D printing professionals the autonomy to produce FDM filament in-house.
According to the company, the Filament Maker Two was developed with direct input from users of the original Filament Maker One, and addresses the need for stability, efficiency and customization in filament extrusion.

Updates and improvements to the Filament Maker include:
- Improved Extrusion Control: The machine features a powerful drive with a new stepper motor and gearbox combination, delivering up to three times more torque and ensuring minimal rpm fluctuation. The system also includes automatic filament tensioning and the capability to produce 3 kg spools.
- Longer Extruder Screw: Extended by 50 mm, the longer screw design promotes optimal mixing and flow stability, contributing to a more consistent filament diameter.
- Touchscreen User Interface: An intuitive touchscreen interface enables easier control of the machine, providing relevant extrusion data, notifications and guidance for users.
- Advanced Monitoring Capabilities: Equipped with a new 3-axis camera sensor, the Filament Maker Two provides accurate measurement of filament ovality and diameter, with an accuracy of 10 microns. The system can detect spool ovality and offers thermal measurement, ensuring optimal temperature stability throughout the extrusion process.
- Easier Access for Repairs: The machine features easily removable components, including the nozzle and screw, enabling straightforward maintenance without the need to send the machine back to the manufacturer. This design facilitates quick troubleshooting and repairs, reducing downtime.
- Future-Proof Technology: The Filament Maker Two is built with customization in mind, featuring an open-source API that enables users to integrate their own development projects. The system is adjustable and ready for future enhancements based on user feedback.
Louis Rinaldo, materials specialist at 3devo, emphasizes that these features are aimed at empowering users to optimize their filament production. “The Filament Maker Two is designed to enable faster research and development processes, allowing our customers to produce high-quality filament that exactly suits their needs,” Rinaldo says.
The company will be presenting the Filament Maker Two at Formnext 2024, Nov. 19-22 in Frankfurt, Germany.
