Cavonic 3D Coating Technologies and InterTech Rx, LLC have combined to bring new barrier coating technology to North American processors of rigid containers. Cavonic eco-shield uses plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition technologies to add an impermeable barrier coating to molded or thermoformed containers. Customized coatings reportedly can be applied to virtually any type of substrate, including PE, PP, PET, PS, and PLA and are also compatible with a wide range of container shapes.Cavonic is based in Germany, and the coating technology is available in North America through InterTech, a new company in Lancaster, Mass., launched by Rick Shaffer, formerly president of Netstal Machinery Inc. Compared with EVOH-based multi-layer structures, Cavonic eco-shield is said to provide better barrier and easier recycling. A complete system includes automation, vacuum chambers, and coating chamber integrated in-line with the processing operation. Training and processing-equipment specification services are also provided.
