WEB EXCLUSIVE: GN Thermoforming Equipment, Chester, N.S., has developed a tool-specific heater platen that is said to offer output rate increases up to 30% while improving product clarity and speeding tool changeovers. The new platen system is designed to match a specific tool by pre-engineering heater and air-channel locations within the platen to optimize the process. That way, heat and forming air are directed to specific areas of the plate. GN ran a test of the platen on 16-mil APET sheet at rates of 26/cycles/min on a 40-mm-high product. A standard GN thermoformer typically would run this product at 20/cycles/min. Cost of the tool-specific heater platen is $12,000 to $18,000 per tool set.
