What's said to be the fi rst fi re-protection system for thermoforming machines has been introduced by AVT Inc., Gladwin, Mich. The Form Safe automated system places a barrier between an overheated plastic sheet and the oven to prevent a fi re without the use of chemicals. The fl exible, heat-refl ective barrier material withstands up to 1700 F and unrolls in response to an emergency stop, power outage, mechanical or electrical failure, or other condition that causes excessive sheet sag. The barrier deploys in about 1 sec to cover the entire lower oven. The heaters immediately turn off. Hot plastic is easily removed from the barrier, which is then reusable. The self-contained system typically costs around $8000 and is said to be installed easily on nearly any thermoformer. It is now standard on all AVT systems. Around 12 barriers are now in use and at least six have prevented fi res, according to AVT president Al Petersen.
