A new thermoformable PC sheet from SABIC Innovative Plastics, Pittsfield, Mass., complies with the OSU 65/65 standard and flame/smoke/toxicity (FST) regulations, thus avoiding the need for waivers. Lexan XHR6000 (extremely low heat release) is also lighter than the usual PVC/acrylic sheet for seating, cockpit liners, window surrounds, door shrouds, and other interior parts. It has a specific gravity of 1.34 vs. 1.47 for FR-PVC/acrylic. SABIC notes that the move to larger seating/sleeping areas has forced more interior components to meet the OSU standard, which applies to parts larger than 2 sq ft. The sheet also boasts excellent colorability, improved texture retention, and formability at lower temperatures than polyphenylsulfone sheet.
