Ultra High-Heat ABS/PC Blend Achieves Exceptional Automotive Part Quality

One of the latest additions to the line of ABS compounds and blends from Elix Polymers is an ultra high-heat ABS/PC blend that recently underwent a series of tests using Roctool’s Heat and Cool (H&C) molding technology as part of Elix’s strategy of providing tailor-made solutions to companies processing its specialist materials—in this case, targeted to automotive. 

The performance of Elix Ultra HH4115HI ABS/PC was quantified in terms of aesthetics and processing performance using Roctool’s H&C induction heating technology to characterize this innovative blend in order to expand its range of applications, says Elix’s automotive business development manager Jose Pedro Abad. The material characterization is part of Roctool’s ongoing effort to further develop its High Definition Plastics material database which is designed to help OEMs achieve exceptional part quality and increased performance, according to Roctool’s CEO Mathieu Boulanger. 

Roctool characterized the surface replication following three types of surface structures: chemical grain, EDM grain and laser grain as well as improvements in gloss and color. Besides surface replication, flow length studies have also been carried out. “Indeed, Roctool’s technology allows a reduction of the color lightness and we obtain a ‘piano black’ part with a perfect surface finish,” says Abad. Moreover, replication of the textured surface was improved by over 50% and there were significant improvements for each type of surface structure, especially with low roughness. Also, based on the flow, strong improvement using Roctool technology vs. conventional technology was demonstrated in terms of pressure drop reduction which is up to 60 percent and flow length up to 100 percent. This study showed that using Roctool technology, one can reduce the thickness of a an injected part from 1.5 mm (0.059 in.) to 1 mm (0.039 in.).
