Pyramid Plastics Adds Three Molding Machines

Pyramid Plastics, a division of Pyramid Molding Group, has completed phase one of a three-year plan to expand its operations with the purchase of three new injection molding machines plus additional auxiliary equipment.

Pyramid has installed three hybrid LS Mtron ONE injection molding machines, including two 1000-ton machines and one 500-ton press. Pyramid says all three are equipped with smart factory features that will push the company towards Industry 4.0. A company spokesperson told Plastics Technology that Pyramid now has 30 injection molding machines, ranging in clamp force from 40 to 1000 tons.

Pyramid Plastics has increased its production floor square footage by 12% to accommodate the new molding machines. The spokesperson said Pyramid added off-site warehousing to allow it to install the presses into its existing plant floor space. The company also installed a new Konecranes overhead crane—7.5 tons—it already has a 10-ton crane. The new overhead crane allowed Pyramid to put the machines closer together, maximizing floor space. Pyramid Plastics occupies approximately 100,000 ft².

In addition to the new machine’s smart features allowing Pyramid to monitor processes in real time and gather data that can be used to improve part quality and consistency while reducing cycle times, Pyramid said in a release that the new, larger molding capabilities will also help it attract and retain customers in the automotive, medical, aerospace, defense, consumer and industrial products industries.

Regarding its three-year plan, the Pyramid spokesperson said that prior to the expansion, the company focused on its people and manufacturing process. “Once we had that handled, we focused on increasing our capabilities,” the spokesperson aid. Going forward, the company plans to buy three to five presses/year for the next 2 years, while upgrading the facility’s infrastructure. Further down the line, Pyramid will also be looking to buy a second location to further expand the business. Pyramid Plastics is a division of Pyramid Molding Group, which includes sister company Industrial Molds.
