The 11th edition of ColombiaPlast, and first organized with the assistance of Messe Düsseldorf, recently concluded in Bogota, Colombia. Over five days, the show reported that more than 36,000 visitors attended the fair, which featured 207 exhibitors from 17 countries, covering 5000-m2 (approx. 54,000-ft2) of exhibit space.

ColombiaPlast exhibitors hailed from Argentina, Austria, Brazil, China, Chile, Colombia, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan and the U.S. In addition to the exhibits, the show featured more than 70 conferences.

ColombiaPlast 2022 was jointly organized by Acoplásticos, Corferias and Messe Düsseldorf North America. This was the first time that Messe Düsseldorf North America was involved in the event, after the three companies signed an agreement in December 2020. Messe Düsseldorf North America is the U.S. subsidiary of the organizer of the triennial K Show, which will be held later this month in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The new agreement meant ColombiaPlast is the first trade fair on the South American continent to become part of Messe Düsseldorf’s “Global Gate” portfolio, which includes 10 plastics and rubber trade fairs worldwide. Thomas Franken, Director of the K trade fair at Messe Düsseldorf noted in a release that Colombia is one of the fastest growing markets for plastics technology in Latin America and called ColombiaPlast “the most important trade fair in the region.”

The show included a 1-day business roundtable organized with the support of ProColombia, which drew buyers from Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru and the Dominican Republic to meet with 73 exhibitors.

According to Acoplásticos, the plastics industry currently generates 220,000 direct jobs in Colombia and 80,000 jobs in the recycling industry which has grown substantially in recent years. Acoplásticos’ Annual Colombian plastics recycling survey showed that from 2019-2021 there was 19% growth in tons of recycled plastics in Colombia. This represented an increase of 145% in sales in the country’s recycling market. The next ColombiaPlast will take place from Sept. 30–Oct. 4, 2024 in Bogota.
