Polyester Bottle Cap Announced
Origin Materials announced its creation of an all-PET bottle cap to facilitate recycling.
Origin Materials announced it has created a bottle cap made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), enabling improvements to post-consumer recycling. The PET is expected to provide better oxygen and CO2 barrier properties. Any type of PET can be used, including recycled PET or Origin’s own bio-based PET, which is made from chloromethylfurfural derived from wood residue.

According to the company, the cap is designed to be cost competitive with existing caps, as well as aid in the implementation of mono-material packaging.
“An all-PET bottle and cap and closure system is an obvious, necessary next step in beverage packaging and recycling. With our process, we can make caps from 100% recycled PET or 100% bio-based PET, unlocking important sustainability and potentially performance benefits for our customers.” says John Bissell, co-founder and co-CEO of Origin Materials.
