Arburg showcased its high-temperature Freeformer 300-3X, which processed medically approved PEEK to produce skull implants at Formnext 2021. The machine’s build chamber can be heated to 200 C and the plastic material to up to 450 C. The company says that the process quality of medical technology products and other safety-relevant components can be reliably documented and traced back 100% using the “ProcessLog” customer portal app. In addition to Arburg’s Freeformer exhibits, innovatiQ’s portfolio was also on display at the stand. Starting December 1, both divisions will be bundled under the management of Victor Roman in a new subsidiary, Arburgadditive GmbH + Co KG.

At Fakuma 2021, Arburg showed that the Freeformer 300-3X can produce functional components from Ultem 9085. This original PEI/PC blend is approved for aerospace applications. The Freeformer specially designed for high-temperature applications uses Arburg Plastic Freeforming (APF) to produce functional components from Ultem 9085. The range of materials for the APF process includes material based on polyetherimide (PEI) such as Ultem 1010, medically approved Ultem 1004, and Ultem 9085. Optimized temperature management provides the necessary cooling for the system, especially for the axis drives, which position the part carrier with an accuracy of 0.022 mm along the x, y and z axes.
