Wacker To Present Resource-Saving Silicon Rubber for Food Applications
Molded parts made from Elastosil eco LR 5003 save resources and meet the guidelines for food contact products even without thermal post-treatment.
Wacker has developed a series of temper-free liquid silicone rubber (LSR) grades that it says are particularly suited for food and sensitive applications. One of these new grades is a biomethanol-based variant, indicated by the name “eco”.
Molded parts made from Elastosil eco LR 5003 are resource-saving and meet the guidelines for food contact products even without thermal post-treatment. As a result, lifestyle products, drinking straws, baking tins, dough scrapers and other items can be produced efficiently and in large quantities with the new grade. Wacker will demonstrate using the material to produce mouthpieces for water bottles at K 2025.
The drinking bottles, designed by air up, are equipped with an aroma pod that creates a sensory perception of flavor without adding sugar or other additives to the water.

Even without post-curing, molded parts made from the LSRs comply with the volatiles content limits stipulated by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for food contact products. Elastosil eco LR 5003 may be postcured to achieve even greater strengths.
Elastosil eco silicone rubber grades are produced in a resource-efficient manner and stem from plant-based methanol derived from non-fossil sources. The production is certified in accordance with the REDcert2 standard, thereby ensuring the traceability of renewable raw materials along the entire production process.
