In the world of plastic extrusion, few names resonate as strongly as Luigi Bandera, the innovative mind behind the Italian company Costruzioni Meccaniche Luigi Bandera. Inducted into the prestigious Plastics Hall of Fame in 2024, Bandera's legacy is one of groundbreaking inventions, technical prowess and a deep commitment to excellence.
Born in 1921 and passing in 2003, Luigi Bandera's journey into the realm of plastic extrusion began during the tumultuous years of World War II. Recognizing the potential of this emerging technology, he invented the first extruder, a 60-mm screw designed for PVC pipes and profiles. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career that would shape the future of the plastics industry.
After the war, Bandera officially launched his own venture, Costruzioni Meccaniche Luigi Bandera in 1947, in his hometown of Busto Arsizio, Italy. Initially focusing on PVC and rubber extrusion systems, the company soon expanded its horizons. By 1950, Bandera’s business had grown significantly, evolving into an industrial-scale producer of thermoplastic resin extrusion systems.
One of Bandera's most significant contributions came in the 1960s with the introduction of coextrusion systems. These innovative designs included the creation of the largest five-layer coextrusion line for blown film applications at the time, along with pioneering high-thickness membrane extrusion. These advancements cemented Bandera's reputation as a leader in the field.
A pivotal moment arrived in the 1990s when Bandera unveiled the patented dryless technology for direct extrusion of PET. This revolutionary concept transformed the industry, enhancing efficiency and productivity on a global scale. Today, Bandera's company stands as one of the foremost manufacturers of plastic blown film and sheet extrusion machinery.
Throughout his illustrious career, Luigi Bandera was not only a technical innovator but also a pillar of his community. His philanthropic endeavors and commitment to charitable foundations left a lasting impact beyond the realm of plastics. Recognizing his contributions, Bandera was awarded the Cavaliere della Repubblica, a prestigious honor from the Italian Republic president.
Bandera's legacy endures through his 26 patents and the countless lives touched by his inventions. The impact of his work can be seen in the 35,000 Bandera extruders operating worldwide, producing an astonishing 54,000 tons of extruded polymers daily. His technical acumen, combined with a charismatic leadership style, continues to inspire generations in the plastics industry.
