Barrier-Enhanced PLA Is Under Development

NatureWorks LLC, Minnetonka, Minn., is exploring several barrier technologies including multilayer structures, coatings, and additives to improve the shelf-life performance of its polylactic acid (PLA) resins. It will give a presentation at the Nova-Pack Americas 2006 conference, Feb. 5-7 in Amelia Island, Fla., NatureWorks has produced three-layer structures with PLA surrounding a typical barrier resin. PLA bottles are also said to accept coatings such as SIG Corpoplast’s Plasmax (silicon oxide) and Sidel’s Actis (amorphous carbon). The conference is sponsored by Schotland Business Research.
